Philip Hobbs is a successful National Hunt trainer based in Somerset. He took out his training licence in 1985, whilst still riding as a professional jockey (160 winners between 1975 and 1986). His father had bred and run several horses in the family colours, and his wife Sarah, who was a junior eventer, has ridden winners in point-to-points, under National Hunt rules and on the Flat.
After leaving school in 1989, Ralph spent a year in Australia, working for Bart Cummings and Colin Hayes. On his return, he started as a stable lad for Jimmy Fitzgerald, before becoming head man to Arthur Moore (champion trainer at the time). Ralph then had a brief stint with Martin Pipe, then moved to Peter Walwyn as Assistant Trainer. He took over the license in 2000 when Peter retired, and is now based in Hampshire.
