Somerset trainer Philip hopes for glory at Aintree

Somerset based racehorse trainer Philip Hobbs is hoping for glory at The Grand National on Saturday 5th April. Two horses from his Sandhill Racing Stables near Minehead have been entered for the race.

“Balthazar King” is said to have a good ‘each way’ chance, having won the Cross Country Chase at the recent Cheltenham Festival. He finished 15th in last year’s Grand National. “Chance du Roy” has a good record over the fences at Aintree, having won the Becher Chase there last year.

Hobbs has scored more than two thousand wins in his career as a trainer, but has never won the Grand National which, this year, carries prize money of more than a million pounds for the first time.

“Since 1985 we’ve had a second and a third but we actually haven’t won it as yet so it would be fantastic if we could manage to. We certainly have a chance but the race is still a little bit of a lottery. You need a fair bit of luck.”

An estimated 600 million people around the world will watch the race live on television as 40 horses line up to race over the famous fences, including Becher’s Brook, Canal Turn and The Chair.
