Richard Johnson continues Cheltenham success
Jockey Richard Johnson followed his recent success at Cheltenham with victory in the BetFred Midlands Grand National at Uttoxeter Racecourse.
Johnson, who had two winners at Cheltenham this week, rode the 13-2 favourite Goulanes to glory for owner, Roger Brookhouse and trainer, David Pipe.
David Pipe has trained the winner of this marathon race for the last four years – winning every year since 2011.
Goulanes started slowly in the four-and-a-half mile race, but the horse soon tracked down and overtook the leaders at the last jump before storming to a sensational win ahead of Alpha Victor and West End Rocker.
Despite joking about the prize money, a triumphant Johnson said: “It is fantastic to be here today.
“This is actually the race my father rode the winner for my grandfather in 1982 and I was here at just the age of four watching him.
“I have been placed in this race a lot of times before and never won it, so it is great to win it today.”
Earlier in the day, punters were thrilled by a series of tight races which saw Pure Style (11-4 ), Bold Chief (9-1) and Liberty One (9-1) all claim first place.
