Thornton on-course for 1000 winners

Amlin World feature:

Andrew Thornton is one of the Amlin Plus sponsored jockeys, an association that has spanned over 10 years. We spoke to Andrew about his background and what keeps him in the saddle, and then asked him a few quick-fire questions.

Jockey Andrew ThorntonGrowing up in County Durham, Andrew started riding out for the late WA Stephenson in the Christmas and Easter breaks when he was just 13. A keen rugby player at school, Andrew chose to follow his passion for riding, leaving behind his desire to play rugby for the nation. Over 940 winners later, he still loves every minute.

“I do a lot of miles and love the day-to-day, up at 6am, riding out, schooling young horses and going to races,” said Andrew. “It’s a challenge and I still enjoy the buzz.”

Motivated to reach his ambition of 1,000 career winners, Andrew has had many career highlights to date. These include winning the Cheltenham Gold Cup on Cool Dawn in 1998, King George VI Chase and the Scottish and Welsh Grand Nationals.

What is the best horse you’ve ever ridden? It’s hard to choose a favourite, but I would say Cool Dawn, See More Business and French Holly.

What is your favourite course to ride? Ascot.

Which race would you most like to win? The Grand National, the people’s race.

What is the worst injury you’ve ever suffered? I dislocated my right shoulder and tore all of the tendons and ligaments. Recovery took seven months.

Who is the funniest jockey in the weighing room? Mattie Batchelor, bar none!

Away from racing, what do you do to relax? Play golf.

What is your favourite meal? Roast beef (rare, of course!) and Yorkshire pudding.

If you could invite three celebrities to dinner who would you choose? Alan Shearer, Kevin Keegan and for entertainment Peter Kay.
